Mediator safeguards broadcasting facility

The SWR broadcasting center, a high-capacity broadcasting and production facility in Baden-Baden, Germany, chose ASSA ABLOY’s Mediator system for its unbeatable quality, convenience and reliable security.

Mediator is compatible with access control systems, is user-friendly and ensures effective protection against break-ins – all reasons why it was chosen to secure the SWR facility, which houses management for television and radio, as well as engineers and production.

“As the second-largest institution in the ARD – the organization for German public broadcasters – the SWR must comply with high security standards,” says Sascha Schorpp, Manager of the Security and Networks Section at the compound.

Consisting of a self-locking escape door lock and effeff’s electric door strike, Mediator ensures that outside doors lock automatically, but can still be opened from the inside, without a key, at all times.
Schorpp says this feature is particularly important in the event of an emergency: “The panic function guarantees a safer escape route. With Mediator, we have finally solved the problem of safeguarding escape routes once and for all.”

Mediator works perfectly with the building’s access control system to ensure security – a feature Schorpp says was of utmost importance to the facility.

“The access control system is an essential element. It controls the flow of people, secures the building and protects valuable property, company records and customer information,” he says.

Mediator’s convenience is another advantage: Schorpp says locked entrance doors can easily be opened from a gatehouse using the telephone system.

With SWR buildings being upgraded across Germany, the system needed to be installed without any time-consuming, costly cabling work.

“Mediator’s electric control unit is already fitted into a door’s frame, so there is no need to install a control unit, as in conventional motor-driven locks. This means that doors can be retrofitted without much effort at a low cost.”
